What peer mentor relationships do you thrive in?
I thrive in peer mentorship relationships that are built on mutual respect, trust, and a genuine desire to learn and grow together. I find immense value in connections where we can openly share our experiences, challenges, and successes, while also offering support, encouragement, and constructive feedback. Collaborative environments where there's a spirit of generosity and reciprocity foster the most enriching mentorship dynamics for me.
Together, we amplify each other's strengths, navigate obstacles, and celebrate achievements, creating a symbiotic relationship that propels us both forward on our journeys of personal and professional development.
What made you become a peer mentor?
My own journey through trauma has been the driving force behind my decision to become a peer mentor. Experiencing challenges firsthand has given me a profound understanding of the impact that trauma can have on one's life. Through my own healing process, I've gained insights, tools, and coping strategies that I believe can make a difference for others who are on a similar path.
I've found immense strength and purpose in using my experiences to support and uplift others who may be facing similar struggles. Becoming a peer mentor allows me to offer a compassionate ear, share my story with authenticity, and provide guidance based on my own learnings and growth. My goal is to create a safe and supportive space where individuals can feel understood, validated, and empowered to embark on their own journeys of healing and resilience. By turning my trauma into a source of empathy and connection, I'm committed to helping others navigate their own healing process and find hope in the midst of adversity.
What area of support would be most aligned with your work with mentees?
Given my experiences with homelessness, single parenthood, employment betrayal, small business failures, and broken intimate relationships, I understand the multifaceted challenges individuals may face in various aspects of their lives. Therefore, the areas of support most aligned with my work with mentees encompass a wide range of domains:
› Emotional Support & Relationship Support
› Job Preparation/ Support
› Entrepreneurship Coaching
› Self-Care and Wellbeing
› Single motherhood, LatinaX community
How do you take care of yourself when helping others?
When assisting others, I prioritize maintaining a healthy balance between my personal and professional life to prevent burnout and ensure I can continue providing effective support. As a mentor I am to set firm boundaries around me, practice self-care, seek support from my social network, continue to learn and invest in my personal and professional development, reflect and evaluate my life experiences, and I try my best to say no often.
By prioritizing self-care and implementing healthy boundaries, I ensure that I can continue supporting others from a place of strength and stability, without becoming overly emotionally attached or depleted.
