A little about me:
Hello all! I am from Sunny South Florida, Broward County to be exact. I am a proud mother to two beautiful black princess and also a fur-momma to a tuxedo cat, Kuromi. I am a survivor of commercial sexual exploitation of child(ren) (CSEC) and former commercial sex worker. My passions are juvenile justice system reform and restorative justice.
I founded a survivor-led and community-based non-profit in South Florida that provides mentoring to at-promise girls and education on human trafficking. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Women's and Gender Studies and English, with a certificate/minor in Global Black Studies from Florida International University. Currently, I am completing a master’s degree in social work from Howard University.
What peer mentor relationships do you thrive in?
I thrive in peer mentorship relationships when the peer and I can build trust, are honest with one another, contribute to healthy relationship, and respecting each other boundaries.
What made you become a peer mentor?
I became a peer mentor because I believe and have seen the power of mentorship and the benefits of having a peer with similar life experiences. Personally, I never encountered or had a survivor mentor; navigating coming out of commercial sex work and stabilizing in recovery without peers can be challenging. Because of my experiences (work and personal) this motivates me and encourages me to be a peer mentor, I know there is a need!
What area of support would be most aligned with your work with mentees?
› Small Business Building (For-profits and Non-profits)
› Job Preparation/ Support
› Life-skills
› Emotional Skill Building
› Providing a listening ear
How do you take care of yourself when helping others?
I take care of myself by regularly attending therapy sessions, getting manicures/pedicures, hair styled, going for walks/running, listening to affirmation music/messages, self-care baths, each weekend participating in social outings and activities, art, and reading BIPOC romance novels- self care is a religion to me lol, I have to practice self-care regularly. These self-care activities allows me to build internally by taking care of my mental and spiritual space. When I am fully charged I can be a support systems to others.
